Escape on the Underground Railroad by Nancy LeSourd is about two girls who are pen pals. They find out that their families are involved in the Underground Railroad. A family comes to Hannah's home to hide. The father has to go on with out his daughter. Pearl, his daughter, stayed behind to learn to read, write and talk like a northerner would. Meanwhile, Sarah's family is working very hard to raise money to buy Tookie, Pearl's little sister. In the end they make it to Canada and live together as a happy family.
I think the main theme was danger. The underground railroad was very dangerous. Some "slaves" were killed or beaten very badly for running. Not all the people that ran made it to the north, there were many that were caught and taken back. Danger was the main theme in this book.
I would totally recommend this book to any girl. The kind of person that I think would like this book is someone who likes history. Some titles are Secrets of Civil War Spies, Attack at Pearl Harbor, and Adventures in Jamestown. I think lots of different types of girls would like this.
